You've probably heard that ICANN are pushing ahead with their plans to introduce new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) -- such as .sydney, .sport and .food.
Their aim is to accept applications in the first quarter 2010. Do you think it is a good thing, or a bad thing? Obviously it's going to open up the availability of good keyword rich domain names however I wonder whether it's going to confuse everyone and make branding more difficult. |

for consumers - new gTLDs are going to confuse them even more (after .biz, .info, .ws, .me and etc...) and most of the people would end up choosing .com/.net(.au) if possible
for large corporates - it means they will have so many more fights with cybersquatters for domain investors - it won't dilute the value of generic domains on established extension. this is my view of the world in the first 5-10 years after the new gTLDs are launched. ;-) |
