Seems like Australian hosting companies are starting to get serious with their pricing and starting to compete with the US.
Jumba have started to offer VPS's for $9.95/month recently - 10gb HDD, 100gb traffic and 512mb RAM. This is a bare bones VPS with no management. You'd probably want to add cPanel/WHM which would cost $14.95/month. See http://www.jumba.com.au/vps. Just looking at VentraIP (formerly CoVe) they've added a new economy VPS plan menu item - page isn't there yet but it will be interested to see what they are about to announce. Their "business" VPS packages start at $45 for 30gb HDD, 50gb traffic and 512mb RAM - but are generally out of stock. See http://www.ventraip.com.au/vps/business-plans/. |

I think it's great they are getting serious about pricing. Australia consumers are getting more savvy and actually using overseas businesses as Australian hosting has always been overpriced.

Jumba's offer quite good! Cheapest VPS I've seen in Australia. Although I think the best offers will still be in the USA, especially for dedicated servers. I've currently got a dedicated server with HiVelocity in the USA for US$61 per month. I don't think there'll be anything near as good as available from US hosts in the near future in Australia

I disagree - there are a number of providers in Australian who is starting to turn into a 'budget' host. However, you will always pay for quality.
The reason its cheaper over in the US is simple: look at their population to ours, look at their exchange rates to ours, and the list keeps going. Of course, Australia will be cheaper - but its great quality and if you're running an Australian business, I would suggest using an Australian provider. |

Having run a VPS for many years (sold it now), I can definitely say I would opt for quality and support over pricing any day. When the server goes down (as it always will), it's in those times when you've got screaming customers that you want good support, and will be glad you've paid for it.

I don't see why we can get both quality service and reasonable pricing.
I would much prefer to "buy Australian" but my small business just can't afford Australian prices at the moment. I have three reseller accounts with different hosts for less than the cost of one with an Australian company. Still we have seen huge reductions in .au domain pricing since the market opened up a little so hopefully the same will happen with hosting. |
