I think its ok to use any of them for as long as you are using a proper redirecting method. The main URL must be with www or without it and not both because it can be a big problem if you have two main url that does not redirect to only one url. Example you type

http://www. websitename.com result www. websitename.com
http://websitename.com result websitename.com

same content but different url address = problem

I am using www because

Google recognizes the two as different versions of the same page, and it really wants to keep just one. But which one does Google use? By being inconsistent in your linking you’re giving Google mixed signals.

It really depends on a couple of things as to whether or not you choose www or non.

First and foremost, you should have proper redirects in place so that no matter what the user types in, it captures it and automatically redirects the user to the format you have decided.

Now if you get a lot of mobile devices, many people do not actually put in the www when they are typing, they want the least amount of typing - those lazy users!

  • When i promote new made site i will go with www version.
  • If it is old domain i will first check which version is indexed more in Search engines and PR of the versions and i will go with that to decide either www or non www

I personally use no www, the URL of my personal website is quite short and adding "www." would quite literally double the length (dan.cx). Most of the time I use no-WWW, and 301 redirect www to the non-www equivalent page.

You can tell it which one is the correct one using Google Webmaster Tools.
