What's your preference? Do you use the www. or not?

I don't use www online but I do use it for offline promotion like catalogues and publications.

Personally I put the www in front, but as long as you support both (and ideally bounce to one or the other) I don't see the big issue.

The reason I asked was that I've seen some webmasters saying that we should all drop the www (eg. http://no-www.org). I really can't find a good reason other than it's not necessary.

I think people are use to www - people know something prefixed with www means it's a web address. Also a lot of applications (such as email packages, word processors, etc) will automatically convert a word beginning with www into a hyperlink it.

I vote to keep the www. As long as you accept both I don't see the fuss.

I agree with this, when not so techie people sees something that with a www. on its beginning, they will immediately think that "ah, its a website, cool!".
